Excerpt Lesson Plan on Chris Crutcher by Kim Hamilton, Molly Brotherton, Janet Herring and Kara Holshouser KidReach Reading Center Biography Chris Crutcher was born on July 17, 1946 in Dayton, Ohio to John William and Jewell Crutcher, but grew up in Cascade, Idaho. He was the middle child of three children. He says that he read only one complete book while he was in high school: To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Crutcher attended Eastern Washington State College where he earned a B.A. degree in Sociology and Psychology in 1968. He and a friend roamed the United States for a year before Crutcher went back to get a teaching certificate. Crutcher spent ten years in Oakland, California as the Director of a K-12 alternative school for inner-city children. He moved back to Washington in 1980 and settled in Spokane. He currently works as a child and family therapist. He is an athlete who enjoys running and swimming. He began to write when he was 35 and bases his novels on real life as he sees it. He tries to combine humor with difficult and serious situations. Crutcher draws on his own experiences for story elements.
