DECEMBER 2002 Holiday Cheer Spokane, WA
This holiday gift was too good to pack away for the season. It won a place in Crutcher's office all-year-long. Jerred, Brenda and Stevie (you know who you are) put their heads together to come up with these nine laser-etched ornaments, one for each of CC's book titles. Check them out. |

OCTOBER 2002 Things are not what they seem... Tucson, AZ
Chris got this photograph from Dian at AETA in March of 2003 -- a moment captured at the AETA conference in Tucson, October 2002. Great picture of some of the attendees, but if you'll take a close look at the literary works of art they're reading, you'll capture a glimpse of Crutcher's sense of humor. Many thanks for Dian for sharing this great memory. |

AUGUST 2002 Another Hit List? Houston, TX.
It's okay...this time. Crutcher wrote the forward for Texas literature expert Teri S. Lesesne and co-author Rosemary Chance's great new book, HIT LIST FOR YOUNG ADULTS 2: FREQUENTLY CHALLENGED BOOKS. It's a "hit" on any roster. Check out this excerpt from the foreward:
"I donšt pretend to have the persuasive powers to change the minds of the censors. There will always be people who believe it is their 'moral' duty to watch over all of us rather than simply watch over themselves. What I wish they understood is this: Every time we adults show kids we are afraid of something that is offensive to us, we take ourselves off that short list of people to turn to in a true crisis." ~ Chris Crutcher |

JULY 2002 One Kickin' Skier
Brenda has energy most people only dream of harnessing, and courage way off the charts. When she faces a challenge, she never gives up. That makes her one of Crutcher's heroes. |

| | |
IS CRUTCHER A "CHILDREN'S WRITER?"
No, not really. Crutcher's work appeals to thoughtful, mature reader of all ages. Universal elements within his books defy traditional barriers. But Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff recognized Crutcher's popularity within the young adult readership, and so featured an insightful interview in her compilation, THE ABC'S OF WRITING FOR CHILDREN. Check it out, if you get the chance -- page 88.
